Every mom of a toddler knows of the ‘copycat’ phase, when your little one follows you around, trying to do everything you do! It’s adorable, even though at times it can result in a big mess! But we don’t mind the mess (we get used to them) and those naughty moments turn into lovely memories later.
When my son was younger, I was a stay-at-home mom who spent nearly the entire day alone at home. Not having a reliable house help meant that I did most of the chores myself, with my three year old scurrying behind me. It was a nice feeling; at least I had company doing housework!!
While I’d cook he’d busy himself with pots, pans and wooden spoons. While I’d dust, he’d walk by my side with an old sock in his little hand. Of course, it wasn’t too long before he’d get bored and go back to his sorting cups and cubes!
One day, I opened the lid of the laundry basket to sort it out when my phone rang. As I was talking on the phone, I could hear my son making some noises near the basket. When I went to check on him, a completely unexpected sight met my eyes! There he was, sorting the clothes by color – reds, greens, blacks all in separate piles!! He was so proud of what he’d done, the satisfaction of a job well done showed on his face. I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time – it was so cute!!
With the sorting done, we went ahead to load the washing machine. My little one decided that doing laundry was fun and he wanted to put the detergent himself! I helped by opening up our jar of Surf excel matic, while he did the scooping. I showed him where he had to put in the powder, while he kept saying that it smelt ‘gooood’!! Laundry is so much more fun when you have a little helper with you!
We often don’t realize it, but kids watch us so closely. Trying to ape everything we do. So the next time you do something, don’t forget that your little one’s watching and waiting to copy you!!
