Well, I haven’t yet thrown a computer out the window, but I’ll be honest – there sure have been times when I wish I could!! Technology is a tricky thing; it gets you hooked with all the cool features and convenience and then drives you nuts when it doesn’t do what it’s supposed to! Thankfully, our mobiles are more reliable and with sophisticated smart phones, we can carry our passions around in our pocket. No question of throwing that out the window!
Speaking of smart phones, isn’t it funny how they started out as chunky devices, moved on to being really tiny and are now back to wide screens that barely fit in the palm of our hand? This reminds me of desktop sizes; I remember a time when a computer looked something like this:
Now, that isn’t something you can just fling out the window, so going by Steve Wozniak’s definition, it’s not exactly trustworthy either! But as the years passed, things changed, and the other Steve (the Jobs one) took over. The world got smaller, and so did everything in it. For kids today, computers like the monstrosity above are nothing short of Jurassic and they certainly don’t know the joy of spinning a large dial on an old style phone!
Of course, kids these days don’t even know the difference between a phone and a computer, and all because of phones that are smarter than us! You can practically carry your world in your pocket – your correspondence, work, photos, books, friends, games, even dresses and shoes. I’m not kidding; thanks to online shopping, you can get everything from workout shoes to hair bands on your smart phone!
Are you wondering why you need your smart phone to shop online when you have a sleek and shiny laptop sitting on your desk? Allow me to explain. Imagine you want to buy some lingerie; is it better to browse options on a 17” wide screen with your in-laws or curious 6 year old walking around? Or would you rather check out sizes and styles more discreetly on your phone? With a desktop, unless you have eyes on the back of your head, you don’t know who’s watching!
If you’re still not convinced, here’s a question: can you do this with a desktop?
There’s more; suppose you want to buy your significant other a surprise gift, wouldn’t you prefer some privacy to make your order? Exactly!
E commerce sites have woken up to the wonders of the smart phone and are now ‘apping’ up; they’re offering app versions of their websites which install in a jiffy and offer you a very personalized shopping experience. For instance, the Myntra app saves all my preferences and gives me updates whenever there is a sale. So it doesn’t matter where I am, I can start shopping the minute I get a sale update; there’s no need to wait to get to my computer!
What’s more, all the major players are going ‘app-only’, where they’re disabling their desktop version and sticking only with the apps. That means that soon, all the good deals that you eagerly wait for will be available on your smart phone and your smart phone alone! If you haven’t done it yet, you’d better hurry and begin installing their apps on your phone – don’t worry, they’re free, which means more money to shop!!
