Today’s recipe is a quick and delicious dessert for toddlers, older kids and the whole family – Bread Halwa. I saw this recipe in a magazine once and was waiting to try it out whenever I had leftover bread. Although, when you have kids at home, you’re more likely to run out of bread than have leftover slices! Finally, the day came and the recipe turned out very good! It was a breeze to make too, and requires just basic ingredients.
Bread Halwa Recipe for Toddlers
Ingredients:
Whole wheat Bread – 4
Milk – 1 cup
Palm Sugar/ Brown Sugar – 1/2 cup
Homemade Ghee – 4 tbsp
Cardamom powder – 1/8 tsp
Cashews – 5
Raisins – 1 tbsp
Instructions:
1. Keep all the ingredients ready. Cut the bread into cubes.
2. Heat a thick bottomed pan with 2 tbsp of ghee and add cashews and raisins, fry them until golden brown. Remove from the pan once done. Then add bread cubes.
3. Toast the bread cubes for 5 minutes or until crisp and golden brown in color. Add milk slowly.
4. When all the milk is added, cook it on a low-medium flame for 10-12 minutes or until the bread is mashed and soft. Give a stir occasionally.
5. Once the milk is almost completely absorbed, add brown sugar and cardamom. Mix well. After adding sugar, the mixture will release a little liquid but will thicken with time. Cook it further until all the milk is absorbed. Keep stirring in between and add the remaining ghee slowly.
6. When the halwa forms a whole mass and doesn’t stick to the pan, add the fried cashews & raisins and switch off the flame.
7. Transfer to a dish and serve immediately.
I prefer adding brown sugar/palm sugar in place of white sugar to make it healthier. You can also use jaggery, adding jaggery to hot milk may make it curdle which might upset delicate tummies. This bread halwa can be given to babies after one year as a special treat, but opt for powdered nuts or dry fruit powder instead of whole nuts. This is a great dessert to make on weekdays after dinner, so do try it out!
